Extracts from the play: Poetry and Lyrics
Map of Stars
Spoken:
We go to a place outside the city
and on the hillside make a map of stars
and then we dance the constellations
asking for guidance from the kai thien*
We dance beyond sense, beyond reason
until our minds merge with the cosmos
and through the music of a billion planets
we hear the wisdom of the furthest galaxies.
* canopy of heaven
Sung:
Tread the Map of Stars
Patterns that they teach
Knowledge to be ours
Always out of reach
The beginning's in the ending
Where the ending starts again
Light years pass in moments
Dancing, falling, spinning...
Can we save ourselves
From sacrifice of a kind
That's so perverse?
Change the story
With a different verse
In which we're not so blind?
Tread the Map of Stars
Dance the universe
And you might find
That you can change
A history
For you and me.
Today My Life
Today my life is so full of pressures
No time to float in daydreams
No time to twist, to fly inside my head
Expectations of reality
CHORUS
Let me fly
A thousand, thousand miles away
Let me shine
Take me away at the speed of light
I can't stop consuming precious time
A world too narrow for my mind
I spend too long in colourful places
All I want to do is reach within
The past has struck a chord with me
It shows me a future of burning flame
Myths and stories set us free
Nothing will ever be the same again.
The lyrics were created in workshops with the Oxford Youth Theatre and the band Red2
